Kitt's first impressions

Hello friends!
We (Kyle and I) finally arrived in Rwanda after a circuitous but fun route through Doha, the "pearl of the Middle East". We wandered though a local market and had a fancy cocktail on the 55th floor of downtown building before traipsing back to our complimentary 5 star hotel! Got a few short hours of sleep before the last leg to Kigali.

Doha by night

All the flights were painless, and we just missed the blizzard that dropped 45cms of snow in Halifax. Speaking of snow, it was a balmy 27 degrees here today, but I digress...

The Rwandans we have met are beautiful people, inside and out. Emmy, whom we recognized by his huge smile, picked us up at the airport and drove us to the nice CASIEF apartment in Nyamirambo. Settling in was easy with Patty having arrived a few days earlier, and the wonderful Christophe having stocked the fridge!

Day one at the hospital was a complete success! The Rwandan residents, led by their program director Paulin, gave morning report at 7am sharp. It sounds like the residents are prepared to, and commonly deal with, very sick patients here. Just last night there was were several obstetrical emergencies and a maternal death. Patty, Kyle and I are teaching Obstetrical Anesthesia to the senior residents this month, however I'm sure they've seen much more than we have clinically! The rest of the academic day was full of interactive sessions, resident cases and 3 simulation stations. And a very enthusiastically competitive game of Jeopardy.

Lunch was a scramble between morning teaching and setting up for afternoon simulation

Overly enthusiastic teaching by Patty

Off to the Serena hotel for a swim and a shower before heading to the Khana Khazana for an amazing Indian food dinner with friends (Christian, Francoise, Paulin and Elizabeth). Patty treated, even though IT IS HER BIRTHDAY...we owe you Patty.
Excited for the next month!!!
