I first met Paulin in November 2008 when he
was chief resident. He showed great potential as a future leader. Today he is program
director and acting head of anesthesia. He brings incredible energy to our mutual vision of creating an excellent anesthesia department.
We spent an office day together working on
multiple projects: planning clinical and academic teaching for September this
year when there will be 30 residents in the program, teacher assignments, simulation
curriculum, education for non-physician anesthetists, improving pain management
in Rwanda, working for better maternal safety, collaborative research projects
and Paulin’s own career path. It was a rich and rewarding discussion. I feel so
fortunate to have a friend like Paulin.
Needless to say, we had to fuel this
productive day with a little coffee from Bourbon Café.

We are heading out for a big adventure this weekend that should include mountain biking, road biking, staying at Paradis Malahide in Gisenyi and gorilla trekking for Kitt and Kyle. My friends, Ruth and Angela, are arriving this weekend. The coming week should be lively.

News from Kitt and Kyle:
Spent the day in the OR at King Faisal hospital with two of the senior residents, Servant and Alcade. A well run, private hospital with more resources than CHUK, our days were spent in air conditioned rooms, with a free lunch!
There were certainly still learning points from the cases, but overall they were performed safely. We had good debriefing sessions with the residents afterwards.
The weather continues to be lovely here, but they could use some rain for sure. Tomorrow we'll be working on more teaching for next week, and setting up the simulation scenarios, before taking off for Ruhengeri midday. Looking forward to the weekend for some road cycling, mountain biking and GORILLAS.

The Paradis Malahide is my favorite place on earth! Make sure Emmy gives you his impression of Emmanuel. Also, I think I had the exact same lunch at King Faisal...
