happy, happy, happy

There are days in Rwanda when all our works seems utterly worthwhile.  Today was such a day.

Tristan and I delivered a full day condensed version of the Teaching and Learning Course that Ruth and I have developed. Our learners were a mixed group of residents from general surgery, obstetrics, urology and anesthesia. Participation was first rate. We had engaged learners throughout.  Tristan and I realized things could get tough when our final session of the afternoon (after an enormous lunch) was about mentorship and also the Rwanda - Gabon CHAN football match was just about to begin. Nevertheless, the guys (all male group) stayed with us and made a number of insightful comments. In fact, they consistently commented about the value of mentorship in the course evaluation.

Each of the four sessions had a practical teaching task and the guys made the most of it. For example, they had work in teams to design and deliver a short presentation on a topic of their choosing, medical or non-medical. One team picked Premier League football.  Needless to say, the discussion was lively.  Later on the group had to teach technical skills to each other.  There were some wonderful moments when the anesthesia team had to teach the surgeons to intubate. The surgeons were so excited when they got the tube in.

Thank you again to my generous friends in Halifax. Some of your gift was used for the catering.

It was all the more rewarding that this teaching happened in the simulation centre - only a dream a few years ago.  To top it off, Rwanda beat Gabon 2-1!  Go Amavubi Go.
