Michelle takes one for the team

We finally got to meet the 10 new first year anesthesia residents.  They are excellent. They had obviously done the preassigned reading.  It's so exciting to have a group of keen learners.  We heard about their aspirations: wanting to make an impact in critical care, obstetrics, pediatrics, pain management, research, and teaching. We can only hope they will keep this enthusiasm and encourage others.

In the afternoon we moved to the simulation centre for a multidisciplinary session on team communication with nurses and trainees from anesthesia and surgery.  Canada geese to talk about leadership.

Michelle pulled out all the stops for the simulated scenario that followed. She had a fake abdomen constructed that would allow the surgeons to actually cut and enter the belly.

All ready for surgery

The OR team came into the scenario and acted in their roles.  Tristan ran the simmon program on two iPads connected by bluetooth. This allowed him to remotely change the patient vital signs and the sim participants to see and hear these changes.

Next Michelle was "intubated".

And surgery began...

This afternoon was a fulfillment of a longstanding dream of mine to bring team simulation to Rwanda.  The participants were insightful and engaged.  Let's hope we continue.

Back at the Serena hotel, Dylan was just talking on his phone and just fell in the pool! Fortunately, the phone was only a cheapie from MTN. Dead as a doorknob.
