Today was Mat's first day in the OR and he intended to watch quietly and learn about the environment. Unfortunately, the anesthesia providers demonstrated many of the issues that have previously been identified as problems: poor assessment, lack of recognition of severity, inadequate planning, multiple anesthesia providers with poor role definition, no leadership, and complete failure to recognize or treat cardiac arrest. Mat stepped in to lead the resuscitation.
I feel most discouraged about the lack of progress.
